There has been a horrible and widespread misunderstanding in the Christian community as to what it means to follow (or submit). The misunderstanding seems to be that following is a position of weakness in which the follower says “yes” to everything the leader asks. Jesus submitted His will to the Father’s, yet it clearly was not out of weakness on His part.
In ballroom dance you have a leader and a follower. The follower agrees to follow in order to make the dance work—not because she is inferior. Actually, she is the one who is showcased. To be a good follower, she needs to be strong, knowledgeable, proficient. A wet noodle who leans on her partner and makes him drag her around the floor is not a good dancer.
It is the same in marriage. The lady agrees to follow, but this does not mean she is a weak non-contributor. God gives all of us strengths, gifts, insights—and I believe He expects us to bring them to our marriage relationship and use them so that our family will become a stronger unit. Wise husbands value and seek out the contributions of their wives.
