I remember what it was like to dance with Bob when we were newbies. The goal at that point was to get the step right without tripping or hurting each other. The victory slogan was, “Both parties still standing and un-injured!” It took time before dancing with each other turned into a pleasurable experience. We had to try new things, laugh at our mistakes, and occasionally we moved together as one. We do not dance flawlessly—not even close. We’ve invested a lot of time, money, and energy to even be tolerable. But we’re getting better and part of the joy is in the journey.
Marriages are like that. At first, you just try to stay off each other’s toes—run the household in an orderly manner and avoid the hot-button issues. For many couples, cessation of hostilities equals success. If you’re willing to invest the time, energy—and really, your whole heart, there’s so much more!
Today is Bob’s birthday. He has invested his heart in Bible study, prayer, and service. He has grown closer to his Lord with each passing year. The closer he gets, the better he “leads” and it is increasingly more delightful to be married to him. Does he still trip? Do we still trip? You bet. But we have a Heavenly Dance Instructor who shows us how to do that perfect, intimate dance both with each other and with Him. I can’t wait for the rest of the dance!
