You’ve heard of the Proverbs 31 Woman. How about the Proverbs 31 man? . . .

3 Qualities Of The Proverbs 31 Husband

I’ll admit, in Proverbs 31, the wife gets star billing. But her husband does make a cameo appearance. What does the Bible tell us about him? What was he like to play opposite such an exceptional leading lady? As I read the passage, three qualities stand out.

This guy is no slouch.

As already noted, the chapter is primarily about his wife. But look at his achievements. Proverbs 31:23 tells us he’s well-known even among the community leaders. He’s made a name for himself. He’s respected.

Men, what are you known for? Are you like that old commercial about E. F. Hutton? When you speak, people listen? Are you known for your exceptional craftsmanship? Your integrity? Your gentleness? When people speak your name, what do they say? “He’s so __________.”

He trusts his wife.

Yes, she’s shown herself trustworthy. But this says to me that he also creates an atmosphere where she can flourish. Words that would indicate the opposite of a trusting husband are “criticizing,” “controlling,” or “negatively comparing her to others.” That makes a wife want to shrivel up—not stretch herself to succeed.

How do you show your wife that you trust her? What do you do or say that communicates you have confidence in her?

He sings her praises.

“There are many excellent, virtuous, capable women out there, but you surpass them all.” Ahhh. Can’t you just see how compliments like that would give her energy to invest in another field or sell some more of her hand-made belts!

Men, how do you score yourself on looking for things to praise your wife for? Are you generous or stingy with your praise? Do you look for opportunities to praise her? Does your wife know she has your stamp of approval? Does she catch your eyes twinkling when you look her way?

The wife in Proverbs 31 is more valuable than rubies. But I don’t think the Bible’s mention of her husband is coincidental. While God can give a person success no matter what the circumstances, an honorable, trusting, encouraging spouse sure makes any assignment more enjoyable.
